"The best thing for me was when you were on stage telling your story"
Adult participant at story circle
I love telling stories, listening to stories, sharing stories; not stories read from the page but stories told from the heart. My style has grown out of many years in the theatre, from my time at the Jacques Lecoq College in Paris and through working in schools with children and teachers.
What joy it is to tell and to receive stories! The storytelling tradition has undergone a major revival in recent times and many people are recognising the enormous power and potential of stories to entertain, educate and heal.
Storytelling creates its own sacred space, a circle of stillness, observation and participation. I work with stories from a wide range of countries and sources, and my repertoire includes my own original stories and adaptations.
I am part of the aural tradition of story telling; handing a story from one person to the next, hearing it grow and develop as it moves around a circle or through time.
Stories have the power to provoke thought, stimulate our senses and transform both the storyteller and the listener. For me, when a story is well told, the emotion, the feeling, is one of having been on an amazing adventure. When the last words are still lingering in the air I am left with the feeling that my soul has been nourished.
In my workshops I encourage the latent story teller, whether they be children or adults. I tailor my work to be age and development appropriate. I also select my programme of stories to take account of the nature of the gathering, the festival or event surrounding the performance and finally the season of the year.
I believe in over-planning and then going with the flow!
